A few years ago a musician who heard me play said this:
“Tim plays sophisticated music that is still very accessible to listeners, technically good
and clean guitar, very melodic and enjoyable to listen to, with interesting and catchy
lyrics, but with a bit of grit.”
My music is a mix of genres across the board: folk, soft rock, country, jazz and classical, all mixed together in
my own distinctive style. I began playing classical guitar in middle school and moved into soft
rock and singer-songwriter music later in high school and through college, while I picked up jazz
elements in my 40’s. I was writing music almost from the very start. Along the way some harder
rock, blues and country found their way in. All that history can be found in my own songs, and
in my covers (which run from the 60’s to the present day, all with my own arrangements).
I use both finger and flat-picking when playing guitar.
I never know how to describe my music, because I am just trying to sound like me. I don’t set out to sound like any
of the artists and composers I like and admire. I don’t want people to hear one of my songs and think, “I’ve heard
that song before, just with different words”.
I’ve played in many dive bars, and it’s not really an atmosphere conducive to
thoughtful listening. Nearly every time someone will seek me out after I play to tell me how much they liked it.
While I love playing to an attentive audience, (perhaps like one found in a calmer, more peaceful venue), I like the
challenge of catching and holding people’s attention in places a bit more boisterous.
I hope to capture an experience in my songs, to express the thoughts and feelings that
encompass it. They are not all true stories, but I hope each one rings true. Most, but not
all, are variations of songs about love and relationships, expressing the joy, mystery and heartache that
surround them. I hope my lyrics portray these images to the listeners and that the music
and melodies are ear-catching and, at times, sophisticated.
I do not know another experience that compares to creating a new song or piece of music.
For me, it feels as though I am both in control, and along for the ride. It’s a
bit like falling in love or having a crush, when you have a one-track mind and can’t think about anything else.
